The Academy

The 6th season of the European Summer Music Academy (ESMA) will take place from July 10 to July 24 2017 mostly in the city of Gjakova, and also in Prishtina and Tetovo (Republic of Macedonia). The students from Kosovo and abroad will have again the opportunity of working with renowned European professors and meeting and exchanging experiences with their peers from other different countries.

As in the past, the ESMA 2017 will be supported by several European Embassies in Kosovo, the Raiffeisenbank Kosovo, the Municipality of Gjakova, and other international and local institutions and sponsors.

ESMA 2017 will continue to be managed by the Artistic Director Mr. Desar Sulejmani and General Manager Mr. Georg Fankhauser with the closed collaboration of the local implementer, NGO GjakovaBasel.

For the first time in the ESMA’s history, the event of International Orchestral Days will be launched. In this light, there’ll be created a new Symphonic Orchestra with participation of string, woodwinds, brass and percussion musicians. After a 10 day rehearsal period with guest professors and under the direction of the Music Director, the Festival Symphonic Orchestra of ESMA will perform a complete symphonic program in concerts in Gjakova, Prishtina and Tetova (FYR of Macedonia).

In this regard, the ESMA 2017 opens the Application process for participation in the Symphonic Orchestra for the below instruments:

String instruments up to:

14 first violins, 12 second violins, 10 violas, 8 violoncellos, 6 double basses

Woodwind & brass & percussion instruments up to:

2 piccolo flutes, 6 flutes, 6 oboes, 6 clarinets, 6 bassoons, 8 horns, 6 trumpets, 7 trombones, 2 tubas, 6 percussion instruments

Up to 9 pianists will be selected to perform as members of the Festival Symphonic Orchestra of ESMA as well.

The concert program of the ESMA Symphonic Orchestra includes works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Launy Grøndahl, Dmitri Shostakovich and Arturo Márquez.

Joren Elsen, a young trombone player, student of the University of the Applied Sciences and Arts of Basel, Northwestern Switzerland will perform the Concert for Trombone and Orchestra by Grøndahl.

A registration fee of 10 EUR will apply for the first time in the 2017 season of ESMA. It will be collected during the official registration on July 10 2017.

The students from cities other than Gjakova will be provided with lodging, including breakfast, in dormitories, private accommodations or hotel rooms in the city of Gjakova.

The participation age is from 17 year old (prior to or on July 24 2017) to 26 years old (prior to or on July 24 2017)

The deadline for online registration is June 24 2017.
